Frequently asked questions
How do I find a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 200 is 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30.
How do I work out a percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the old number from the new one, divide by the old number, and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase.
How do I calculate a discount price?
Multiply the price by (100 minus the discount) ÷ 100. A 20% discount on 50 gives 50 × 0.8 = 40.
What is the difference between "X% of Y" and "X is what percent of Y"?
The first finds a part of a number. The second tells you how big one number is compared with another.
