Many people picture a hacker in a dark room typing furiously. The truth is much more ordinary. Most accounts are lost because the owner was tricked, or because of one small habit.
The five most common ways
- Phishing: a fake message or login page that collects your password.
- Reused passwords: one website is breached and criminals try the same email and password everywhere else.
- Shared codes: someone asks you to send them a code you just received.
- Hijacked friends: a friend's account is stolen and used to message you.
- Old apps and open sessions: forgotten connected apps, or being logged in on a shared device.
Why accounts are valuable
Your account is not just photos. It is your identity, your contacts, your business page, your adverts and sometimes your money. Criminals use stolen accounts to scam your friends, sell fake products or demand payment.
The good news
Because most attacks rely on tricks and habits, a few simple changes stop most of them. You do not need special software or technical skill.
This course in one sentence
Do not trust urgent messages, do not reuse passwords, and add a second lock.
Your task
List the accounts you could not afford to lose (email, Facebook, WhatsApp, mobile money, bank). Your email is the most important. If someone controls your email, they can reset almost everything else.
